Approach to education
'Learning' in our school is a system which is being constantly improved by educators and tech professionals. Basically anything goes that has the potential to make the children happy and successful in 2040. We are all born to be curious, and we're willing to learn what we really want. We just need purposeful challenges, exciting questions, safety, support and opportunities.
The grownups' job is to make it all happen.
Allow mixed ages to learn together
When children of mixed ages coexist in a group they naturally help each other: older kids learn responsibility and can teach the younger ones what they already know (remember, teaching is the best way to learn something!), and the young ones stretch themselves to catch up to the older ones they look up to. Add to the mix teachers, adult volunteers and activities that cut across age and skill levels, and you get yourself an environment everyone can thrive in.
Education is not 'one size fits all'. All students are individuals with distinct learning needs, interests and aspirations, so they need different experiences and challenges in school to bring out the best in themselves.
Focus on the whole child
Our teachers don't just teach facts - they teach critical thinking and a wide range of techniques to deal with different situations on paper (or screen) and in real life. Social and emotional skills, entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation and growth mindset are the skills that will get you further in life.
That's why we aim to focus on the whole child, helping them to develop as happy and healthy individuals with specifically chosen skills that are right for them.
Subjects are taught around themes
Knowledge is naturally connected, so instead of artificially separating information into subjects, we teach in blocks using different tools (like languages, science and storytelling) to work on one theme that has connections to all. And since children have different gifts, our system lets them explore and see how things connect at their own pace. Some may want to go deep into a technical subject, while others may pursue open-ended thinking and creativity.
Manage learning environments by teams of teachers
Since various ages and subjects have been combined in this model teachers can also combine their knowledge and help one another in a physical classroom and via the web around the world. Instead of the lone teacher per subject model, teaching too becomes collaborative, and thus much more creative.
Teachers become coaches, rather than gatekeepers of knowledge and gain a much more personal understanding of each student.
Emotionally safe environment
Learning happens fastest when the students trust the setting so much that they aren't afraid to take risks, make mistakes or do something dumb - and learn from it.
One of the main tasks of the school is to enable kids living in the society of the future. Therefore we believe we should put the kids together in a way as it best represents the colourfulness of the society.
What do students learn?
We would like to empower our students to be self-directed learners. But also to know when to ask for help. Our job is to feed their curiosity, teach them the growth mindset and help them develop the needed social and emotional skills. We don't want our students to memorize the content of whatever test is coming up. We want them to understand the material and be able to apply what they learned, even outside of the classroom. This prepares them to tackle complex challenges in a smart way, whenever they need it.
